The application is simple to use, and can monitor various different sensors within the Macbook Pro and adjust the speed of the fans according to whichever sensor you set up. This helps you to figure out the lower and upper thresholds for temperature should you need to. It’s similar to smcFanControl but provides a little temperature readout in the toolbar along with the speed of one of the fans.

With that in mind, I run Macs Fan Control – a little app that sits in the toolbar and once set up you never have to worry about it again. I think it’s a whole lot cheaper to replace the mac fans every few years (which incidentally, I’ve never had to do) instead of replacing the logic board because the GPU has failed due to heating problems. This is on top of the fact that I’ve reapplied the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU (which did make a pretty decent difference in itself). I tend to disagree, since I do a fair bit of gaming (see my previous posts regarding playing EvE Online under Parallels for example) and both my processor and GPU get ridiculously hot before the Macbook fans decide to speed up from their default. Many people believe that Apple know what they’re doing when it comes to keeping their MacBook’s at the right temperature. And Macs Fan Control is still in use on my MacBook Pro even today (although it’s a new machine and the idea of opening it up and applying thermal paste is less enticing on a new machine!)

I have no doubt it’s kept my Mac alive longer than it would’ve been without it.Ģ018 Edit: Although this review is some years old now, the author of Macs Fan Control has kept the software up to date and this review is still as valid as it was when it was originally written. It looks like CrystalIdea might be considering charging for this in the future – which I wouldn’t blame them for. Also, it’s worth noting that if you’re running Windows in BootCamp on your Mac CrystalIdea have got you covered there too with a version for Windows. For a free application this one is an absolute gem.

Its real-time monitoring features work even if you have changed your hard drive or SSD. The best part is that Macs Fan Control provides full support for third party hardware as well. Alternatively, you can set a constant RPM value or let the system control your fans automatically. You can set up your own minimum and maximum fan speeds, for each fan, on a separate window. Each fan is presented together with its current, minimum and maximum RPM values. Fans are listed on the left side of the window and hardware temperatures are displayed on the right side. What's more, the application allows you to control the fans, as the name suggests, to reduce noise or cool down your hardware if it overheats.Īll the information you need is presented on a compact user interface. Besides reassuring you that they are still spinning, the application can provide you with other useful information, like their RPM, the CPU and HDD or SDD temperature and more. Although it is physically impossible to look at a Mac's fans, you can use Macs Fan Control to find out much more then you would when looking at them. Keeping an eye on a computer's coolers is always a smart idea.
